Another year in the life. Another day, if you wanted to be really nit-picky about it. New beginnings, people kept saying. It really didn't matter too much whether they were new or old beginnings, as everything needed one. And in this case, Amy Morrison was willing take either kind. Careful chalk strokes drew on the board as she prepared herself for the lesson. Dr. Amy Morrison, Professor of Dueling History Lesson 1 - Duel Monsters Timeline Objectives:-Identify major significant dates in the history of Duel Monsters -Identify major significant changes in the Duel Monsters metagame -Discuss the history of the metagame and its continued evolution. -? -Profit...Admittedly, she wasn't sure what prompted her to write the last two lines, which were quickly erased. They weren't adding anything to the lesson anyway. There was plenty there to discuss anyway. All she needed were some students who were also interested in new beginnings.

OoC: I'm just going to guess the class is in the morning... Leon entered the room in a slow stride, walking towards the front of the classroom. "Good morning, Professor Morrison." He said quietly, turning at the front of the room and taking the seat to the farthest left. He had already been up for a couple hours already, putting a new twist on another Remove From Play deck that he was working on, and so far with all the tests he had put it through, was working well. He slid the messenger back off of his back and pulled his laptop out carefully, setting it down and opening Word. He began typing the notes off of the wall, reading through them quickly. After he was done, he opened his bag again and took out one of the many deck boxes inside, this one having a galaxy-shaped swirl on the cover. He began shuffling it, and then drawing test hands while he waited for the class to start.

Tori stood outside of the room, away from the door, shaking her hands and trying to calm herself down. First class. First class. She kept having to tell her this is the beginning--and only the beginning--so nothing that happens now will be permanent or in stone for the rest of the time she'll be here. She took a deep breath, fixed her jacket, and hoped that she wouldn't get in trouble for wearing pants instead of the skirt--but if she did, she had the skirt in the back pack to change into after class. Plan ahead, her adoptive mother always told her. She nodded and turned to go into the glass. At least, she thought thankfully, it was Ms. Morrison. She felt comfortable around her. "Good morning, Ms. Morrison."She spoke in a friendly--with a hint of nervousness--voice. She took a seat in the middle--as far back as she could go without losing sight of the board. She took her bag off and sat down. She rummaged through it, withdrawing a pad of paper, a pencil, and... oh no... did she forget it? Her little siblings had bought it specifically for her--no, here it is. She pulled out a digital voice recorder, and set it up at the edge of her desk. It was high tech and able to pick up the sound of the room. It was better if she sat in the center to avoid getting echos against the walls anyway... wasn't it? Just the first day. Just the first day. Everything is fine, this is just the first day.

Matt stretched as he walked down the halls towards his first class. He had been up for a few hours, eating breakfast and reading a letter from his sister in the cafeteria. The letter had come with a photo of them that they had taken a few days before he left for the academy. Since he didn't have time to go back to his dorm and frame it before class, he had used it as a bookmark in his history book. The student had finished his ramen and left the cafeteria early so he could take the time to find his classroom without running the risk of being late. He had only been at the academy for a few days, so he was still trying to learn his way around the island.
It didn't take him nearly as long as he had thought it would to find the classroom. The academy was nicely organized and easy to traverse despite the plethora of students crowding the halls. As he entered the room, he noticed that several students had arrived before he had. The professor was standing at the board and the other students seemed to be waiting for class to start. The classroom itself looked different and was much larger than what Matt was used to from his school back in the outskirts of Domino.
"Good morning, Professor." Matt said in friendly greeting. Once he had looked over the room and greeted the professor, the Osiris student found a seat at the front of the class. Once he was seated and with little else to do until class began, Matt took out his history book and opened it to the page he had left off on. Matt placed the photo of him and his sister that he was using as the bookmark next to the opened book and began reading quietly. The pages he was reading described the Egyptian origin and use of Duel Monsters, though the entire chapter was dedicated to the subject. There were a few small pictures of ancient tablets or carvings that depicted a few duel monsters that scientists had unearthed in Egypt for reference.

The next person to walk in would be another Osiris, one whose only real defining characteristic was a chain around his neck with a Fog Counter on it, showing a light blue against the red uniform. Will nodded his head as he entered.
"Good Morning, Professor."
He then proceeded to his seat, near the center front of the class. He ended up taking a really deep breath after sitting down, and pulling out of his light blue backpack a notebook, and a pen, all while having his duel disk and deck on the counter, off his arm.
With that, he was ready to face the day, and waited for his first lesson.

As the very tall girl entered the room, she was noticeably nervous. Not only was it her first class, which was more than enough to make her anxious by itself, but there was also the ever-looming sense of dread that came with knowing that, due to her height, she stood out like a sore thumb. Especially now that she was in this bright red uniform. It was bad enough that she had to get it custom made just so it would fit her, since they don't usually get female students who are six feet tall.
Still, in spite of her obvious nervousness and anxiousness about her own body, she was also clearly excited to be here. After all, this was the sort of thing she came here for. To learn as much as she could about the card game her brother had gotten her hooked on, and learn ways to improve. Hell, she'd be happy just to be able to catch up with all the current cards. She barely has any idea what Synchro Summoning is...let along this whole XYZ thing that just recently came out. Both of her decks, while they had a lot of potential to hit the opponent hard, were a bit outdated, and were therefore quite easy for newer decks to counter, or completely disrupt altogether.
However, just because she was woefully behind the times didn't make her any less thrilled to be here, and, she was quite eager to learn all she could in coming here. In the end, she wasn't even sure why she was so dead set on coming here. When she thought about it, an academy centered around a card game did seem a little silly. Of course, Setsuna had only just gotten into the game recent, and was fully unaware of how huge this game really was, and how much of an impact it had made on the world. Of course, all that would come later. For now, she only needed to focus on one thing...taking her first step into the classroom "...um...h-hello...everyone. Th-this is the History of Duel Monsters class...r-right?"

"Good Morning, everybody!" Amy nodded as students started to file in, marking down names next to her attendance sheet. She'd been up for a good hour and a half before even walking in the door, and the large thermos full of coffee would help ensure that she wouldn't risk dozing off. Only five students had filed in so far, but the clock wasn't going to wait for anyone else. If they showed up late, they'd deal with the partial information they heard. If they didn't show up at all, then chances are they'd bomb the test. If you don't pay it forward, you'll pay it on the back end - a simple lesson Amy herself had to learn the hard way.
"Now then...This class is about the History of Duel Monsters. How the game started, the bumps in the road between then and now, and how various design concepts have changed the way we play the game compared to how we did it 16 years ago." Pulling out her own deck, Amy shuffles the cards with ease as she keeps talking.
"When the game was young, you were lucky to have a monster with more than 1600 attack points that didn't have a crippling effect to limit its usage. Fusion and Ritual summoning was not only viable, it was seen as the most effective way to make extremely powerful monsters. If you could get a monster in to play with over 2500 attack points, chances are that alone would win you the game. I'm sure that in comparison to what you see today, such cards would be laughably underpowered.
But that's enough reminiscing for now. Before I get in to the actual timeline of the game, are there any questions you'd like me to answer?"

Tori had heard Setsuna ask the question and waved at her to sit with her before Ms. Morrison had started talking. She listened to what she was saying but didn't raise her hand instantly. She wasn't quite sure what she would ask. After all, she didn't know much of anything--she was learning EVERYTHING about dueling that was starting today. Oh what a tall task, she felt she had before her...

Calm brown hair turned to the wall of the class and his face was revealed to the classroom. Beige eyes scanned the room trying to find a seat. Attendance for the class was the first thing noticed but it wasn't like Marvelo actually cared. He was here for the luxuries, the education, and to just get away from the place he had called 'home'. Attempting to be quick, since the lesson seemed to have already begun, Marvelo simply took a seat at the corner of the class room near the door going to the second row. Dropping his back beside him he quietly got out a paper and pencil unsure if he'd actually need it but following common sense that history class would need notes.
Before long the boy was looking up towards the board. Reading the questions he was reminded of what "duel monsters" went through at it's creation. To think something as simple as a children's card game had grown into such a big phenomenon. It's almost a matter of political standings and is only getting higher. Pegasus was simply a genius and Kaiba Corps. lifting it off was amazing. Would that be what they would be learning? Hopefully not or else this would be the class to nap in.
Looking back to the other classmates, Marvelo took notice of the high Osiris number. It was expected that they would probably be the mass majority but seeing that the only other students outside of them was him and an Obelisk wasn't comforting. There had to be more Ra's and Obelisks at this school. Then again, it was the beginning of the school year. Things would take time right? Academy life was going to be a little different than he thought.

A red shirt soon followed the yellow, and a silver haired young man stood at the door, looking a little embarrassed for arriving late. He bowed to the Professor quickly, then sat at the station nearest to him.
"My apologies."

Nana slowly crept into the room after a couple of other people entered, her eyes darting about curiously and slightly excitable. She had no idea where to sit, but could only hope that she could make a new friend in whatever location she could sit in. Her feet moved quickly as she'd bowed apologetically to the teacher at the front of the room, knowing full well that she was late.
"Sorry, Teach! I overslept a bit."
That being said, before she could interrupt the class some more, she found an available seat next to an Osiris girl (TORIIII!) at the edge of the room and took her place there, taking a light breath as she'd pulled out a notebook with which to take proper notes. Of course, she had no idea if the teacher had said anything before she'd arrived and had no idea what the current topic of conversation for the class was. She'd poked at the girl with what appeared to be a bandanna on her head.
"Psssst... Hey... What did I miss?"

DJ stumbled in shortly after Nana, since they lived in the same room when one overslept the other tended to as well when their alarm clocks refused to go off for whatever reason. Even if he had woken up on time, it wasn't like he could leave his long-time friend to oversleep. Following only a few steps behind the energetic girl, DJ looked a bit more disheveled but just as apologetic as he bowed, uttering the same oversleeping reasoning. He looked around curiously, not seeing too many familiar faces give or take one or two from his exploring as he tried to settle on a position of the room to sit down.
He sat down in front of Nana, Tori and presumably Setsuna, able to hear what they might comment on without making it too obvious. He hoped his friend didn't mind that he was sitting nearby, hoping not to disturb her but enjoying familiar company. He took his notebook out of his pack and a pen out of his pocket, spinning the pen around in his fingers lightly before putting it to the book, ready to take notes. He could be a very focused when he needed to be. He listened for anything he might have missed and smiled cheerily, ready to get started.

Tori blinked when she had people next to her but was happy. When prompted about what was missed, Tori quickly filled her in, trying to quote the teacher in a low voice. She didn't know how well she had quoted so she pointed to the recorder. "If you want, I can let you borrow it after class and you can listen. If you have any other questions, she is taking them right now. I'm Tori by the way."She looked back at the teacher, a small smile on her face. Not bad. Not bad. Social and friendly. Good...

"No questions? Fair enough, then let's get going." Amy didn't make any motion to admonish or even address those who came in late. She'd check their names off later.
"Now, I know this may be a lot of information for you all to take in, so do try to take notes. It'll save you asses in the long run. Now, in 1996, Maximilian Pegasus filed the paperwork to patent the Duel Monsters card game. After sixteen years, millions of dollars invested, and a global near-cult following, this game has established itself as something that's united the globe. Now, there are five large events that have shaped the game to its current state. Let's see if you can figure them out." with a push of a button, a screen appeared with five blanks next to dates, supposedly representing the large events.

Tori slowly sank in her seat, writing everything down that she could catch (lots of blank spots oddly...). She didn't know the answers--if she didn't know how to duel, how would she know anything else? Maybe she should just push through the class without drawing attention to herself... Not that the bandanna, hair, red jacket made her stick out. No. Why would it? She made a face as she kept writing. Just make it through without being called on...
